On the occasion of St. Josephine Bakhita Day, we organized a special awareness program for children in all our Evening Study Centers. The main objective of the program was to help children understand the values of freedom, dignity, and safety. The session also aimed to create awareness about safe and unsafe situations and to encourage children to live with courage and confidence.
As part of the program, the life story of St. Josephine Bakhita was shared with the children in simple and understandable language. Her childhood struggles, her experience of slavery, her journey to freedom, and her qualities of courage, patience, and compassion were highlighted. The message that “No child should live in fear or slavery” was strongly emphasized.
Various child-friendly activities were conducted to reinforce the message. A storytelling circle helped children reflect on the importance of freedom and dignity. An art and drawing activity was organized where children expressed their thoughts through themes such as “Freedom,” “Broken Chains,” and “Happy Children.” In addition, role-play activities were conducted to demonstrate safe and unsafe situations, including inappropriate touch, intimidation, or attempts by strangers to take them away. Children were taught to say “No” firmly and to immediately inform a teacher, parent, or a trusted adult in such situations. They were encouraged to understand that asking for help is a sign of courage, not weakness.
The program concluded with an interactive discussion where children shared what they had learned. They also took a pledge: “I will stay safe and help my friends stay safe.” Through this awareness program conducted in all our Evening Study Centers, children’s understanding of safety was strengthened. Their confidence and courage were enhanced, and they gained a clearer awareness of their rights and dignity.
